Preparing your stay in La Rochelle

La Rochelle is best discovered on foot. The Vieux-Port is the ideal starting point, with its lively quays, terraces and emblematic towers. Further afield, you can explore the historic center, with its cobbled streets, arcades and markets.

The town is particularly family-friendly. L’La Rochelle Aquarium is one of the city’s most popular attractions, as are its beaches, safe bike paths and parks. In summer, there are plenty of activities and events for children.

In fine weather, La Rochelle invites you to enjoy the great outdoors: stroll along the coastline, cycle to the end of the harbor, walk to the beach or take a boat trip. It’s also easy to reach neighboring islands such asÎle de Ré for a day out in nature.

Even on overcast days, there’s plenty to do. Museums, aquariums, temporary exhibitions and galleries are just some of the ways to discover the city. The covered markets and cafés of the city center are also pleasant places to take your time.

In fact, it’s one of its greatest assets. The city center, port, beaches and many activities are all within easy walking or cycling distance. Maritime links also allow you to reach certain islands or districts without using your car.

A weekend is enough to see the essentials: port, historic center, aquarium and restaurants. For a more complete stay, 3 to 4 days are ideal to enjoy the beaches, the islands and the local atmosphere without rushing.

La Rochelle can be visited all year round. Spring and summer are perfect for enjoying the outdoors and events, while autumn and the off-season offer a quieter atmosphere, ideal for discovering the city at your own pace.
